Shimizu Corporation of Japan is proposing to cover the moon in solar panels and beam the energy down to earth. It sounds much like sci-fi but the project may result in 13,000 terawatts of solar energy to be continuously sent to earth via microwave or laser. [Oops my neighbor just got zapped!]
The spark for this new wave of alternative energy may be due to the recent Fukushima disaster. So far no timeline or schedule has been established for what would be the largest public grid ever built.
The Luna Ring will overcome inefficiency of conventional solar power and can satisfy the planet’s energy needs according to Shimizu. Astronauts would establish robots on the moon and using the soil can make water, cement, oxygen and ceramic objects which will be used to accomplish the project. A railway system is also proposed to assist in construction of the ring.
